Biography

Van Lefan (樂凡) is a Taiwanese interdisciplinary artist currently based in Vancouver, BC, working between sound, dance, Northern Shaolin kung fu, theatre, and visual arts. With her voice, guitar, flute, she moves between folk, pop, and experimental sound, writing songs that are inquiries into both personal and collective experiences. Her works serve as existential reflections on finding magic and purpose within the ordinary, and prayers for collective liberation.

Her debut album “What Holds Us Together?” (2022) is a sonic journey that synergizes folk, pop, experimental soundscapes and poetry, weaving a tapestry of ancestry, identity, ecological reverence and social justice. She will be releasing her second album "Unsent Letters: To Whom It May Concern” in February 2025. In recent years, Lefan has performed at Taiwan Fest Vancouver, Jade Music Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Vines Arts Festival, Vancouver Mural Festival, and across Taiwan on a joint tour with Tennyson King in April 2024. She also works as a sound designer for theatre productions, and 4DSOUND technician at Lobe Spatial Sound Studio.

“Whispers in the Wind” by Van Lefan is like a lullaby from your childhood that suddenly gets a chance to live an adult life while retaining all its tenderness and magic. When I first heard this song, it instantly transported me to that carefree world where dreams were as real as the reality around us.”
